The company has now raised more than $80 million, and while it is not disclosing its valuation, PitchBook data notes that it is $715 million as of this round (which appears to have closed earlier in the year). The Series B is being led by Spark Capital, with participation also from Unbound, Reid Hoffman and Canaan Partners (both of which led its previous round, a $13.4 million Series A earlier this year), Slow Ventures, Breyer Capital, Wamda Capital, Flourish Ventures and additional unnamed investors from the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America. At a time when the global economy has been under pressure, Taptap Send saw business grow eight-fold, the company said. The company’s hook is that it charges no fee for the transfer (it makes its cut via foreign exchange rates), and believes that its service is the easiest on the market to use, and it integrates with whatever mobile money wallets are already being used locally, meaning recipients do not have to add anything extra to their devices, or learn any new techniques, to be able to receive money via the service. In one development of that theme, today, Taptap Send - one of the startups building tools to manage these money transfers - is announcing $65 million in growth funding as it continues its mission to enable remittances specifically to the most overlooked countries. The World Bank estimates that some $589 billion will be sent this way in 2021, according to research from the World Bank, up 7.3% on 2020, as parts of the global economy started to claw back growth after a tough 2020 due to COVID-19. Cross-border remittances - when people living and working abroad send money back home to friends and family - continues to be a huge part of how those living in developing countries, off the global financial grid, can be helped. I think I can speak for most Americans and say that we would love to move away from SMS, but that complicates things. Like the majority of banks ONLY offer 2FA via SMS, which is one of the least secure methods, but everyone has access to it, and it's extremely simple to understand/use. SMS is still extremely popular, both for personal use and institutional. It's because this sub and Reddit is mostly American. In the Bluefox logo, emergence takes precedence because it is easier to understand the composition as a recognizable animal silhouette rather than focusing on the specific triangles, diamonds, and lines. Let’s look at two examples, one in which the simplest form is the whole form and one in which it is the separate shapes. Often, basic geometry and past experience provides the answer as viewers have an easier time interpreting forms that are already familiar to them. Designers must use their judgement when determining which interpretation of a composition the viewer will find the most simple. While important, the law of simplicity is not as easy to define outright as other Gestalt principles. The Gestalt Principle of Simplicity states that we perceive the simplest shape possible, even when it is made up of several different shapes. This means that when presented with an image containing multiple shapes, the mind may choose to separate them or group them depending on which solution is the most straightforward.įor example, even though the pictured image could contain three identical, overlapping shapes or eighteen separate lines, we tend to assume the former because that is the simpler visual solution. The Principle of Simplicity states that the eye will instinctively choose to interpret the simplest possible form. With the above concepts of perception in mind, let’s take a look at the Gestalt principles. Past Experience: Subjective personal or cultural experiences influence how a form is interpreted. This holds true even if the foreground element is completely flat: the eye will see everything surrounding the subject as the background. Figure-ground organization: The eye organizes forms in 3D space, separating elements into background and foreground. This happens frequently in optical illusions such as Rubin’s vase. In other words, the eye is always trying to resolve unstable forms, and in the case where there are multiple options for stability, the eye will bounce back and forth between multiple interpretations. Multistability: When there is more than one possible interpretation of an ambiguous form, the eye will perceive each interpretation simultaneously.Invariance: People recognize similar forms in spite of variations such as color, scale, rotation, or weight. For example, negative space design is built around creating forms out of gaps, such as the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo. Reification: The eye has a tendency to fill in gaps and create forms even without explicit details.Emergence: The entire form of an object is understood first before its individual parts.Past experience means that we can interpret this image as a picnic table even though we could see an abstract triangle. But there are a number of other underlying psychological concepts relating to perception that inform our understanding of Gestalt theory (which goes beyond perception to describe visual relationships). Gestalt theory itself describes how visual elements are grouped and separated to create order through stable forms. But to understand Gestalt’s visual relationships better, let’s first look at some relevant concepts of perception. In this article, we’re going to investigate these Gestalt principles and how to apply each one to design. Consider music, for example-our brains are wired to organize what we hear into cohesive melodies rather than separate notes.įor graphic designers, employing Gestalt principles is an essential tool: designers are able to emphasize visual relationships and communicate more effectively when they understand how viewers interpret visual information. The word “Gestalt” literally means “form” in German, and this is fitting because the theory describes how the mind transforms apparent randomness into reliable forms. The 6 Gestalt principles describe how we perceive visual relationships between objects. Since then, it has found acceptance in disciplines ranging from therapy to cybernetics to design. The theory behind them was founded over the 1910s and ’20s by German psychologists Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka. The Gestalt principles form a psychological framework for how the human mind perceives and organizes visual information. This one's a keeper for at least another 3 years, by which time I will probably have upgraded to High Sierra or even Catalina with the DosDude patch.Īfter replacing the drive of my Mid-2010, I conclude that software control is the way to go. Glad I did this because when removed there was a great deal of clogged dust particles remaining in the housings which required a good cleaning too. Whilst doing this it was obvious that the fans would benefit from removal and thorough cleaning. So I installed a Samsung 860EVO SSD in place of the original HD. I'd been planning to sell my mid 2010 27" iMac and purchase the new 2019 model, as the performance had significantly dropped off despite doing an OS clean install. Simply shorted out the HD connector with a home-made jumper wire as shown HERE. Just do what many have successfully done, myself included. Fabbing a chip that isn't completely buggy and people want to buy is already a small miracle- better software support can always wait until the chip becomes a hit.Don't waste your money on that OWC (or similar) temp sensor! Just pointing out that there are reasons things are the way they are. Of course, any upstreaming efforts are great and I think things are trending in a good direction. Not to mention the language barrier for Chinese chip vendors. That means more thorough test and validation, code that meets the standards of the kernel, and more engineers to actively maintain the code. Upstreaming to Linux on top of all that means that you actually need to support and validate the set of features your chip claims to support. That's where the support contracts kick in. This requires active maintenance, which means engineers on the vendor side. It's an active process of reporting bugs, investigating them, and getting fixes merged upstream into the vendor's BSP, at the very least. The datasheet only gets you so far, especially for undocumented hardware quirks, and the vendor is in a much better place to understand what's happening and fix them. If customers aren't exercising some feature of the chip, bugs can and will go undetected in that module. It's not just a matter of a driver working or not- hardware bugs or weird undocumented behavior show up all the time. But chip bring-up and driver support can be messy affairs. You see the big vendors upstream proactively, and they have whole teams supporting upstreaming efforts. That can provide enough momentum for a community-driven upstreaming effort. The ARM SBC market flips this, where you have a bunch of enthusiasts, and then a smaller market of businesses wanting to use them in their products. A lot of this stuff won’t meet the standards of the Linux kernel without lots of work. But it’s also incredibly expensive to write all that kernel code and take it through the process of upstreaming. There’s a good business case for it, as better and widely available software support will help sell the chip. Thus, getting support landed into Linux upstream is primarily the task of the chip vendor. They’ll do it if they have to, but the engineers will grumble about it the entire time. The customer then needs to figure out what they want to do: Take the kernel blob as-is? Get the vendor’s kernel source and try and modify it for their specific needs? Rebase it to a newer kernel? The customer typically wants to just get enough support to ship their product they’re not in the business of maintaining some other company’s kernel patches. The bare minimum for this is typically a set of hacky kernel patches targeting a giver kernel version. SoC vendors’ main focus is to make the chip and give it enough BSP support for customers to buy it and build their products around it. This is a common story in ARM / embedded linux. I replied to the message in the chat box that I can confirm I would like a refund. It was a few days before I saw this message, and I would like to note that this is the only time that I was somewhat untimely with my response. If you no longer wish to continue using your service, please open a Cancellation Request for your server in the Client Area by navigating to Services > My Services > Select the service you want to cancel > Request Cancellation. It appears that your server is now active. Please refund my money as soon as possible.Ī day later I received a message back from their customer support. I'm disappointed that there was no warning of a wait time. I need this server and unfortunately I don't have the time to wait for an available server to be made. After waiting for 3-4 hours with the server icon indicating that I would receive my server "soon", I've decided to request a refund and instead go with a more reliable service. I was unfortunately greeted by a "pending" screen which stated my server would be ready within about 20 minutes. A few hours ago I purchased a 12Gb server, which I needed quite urgently. For those who are unaware, Shockbyte has a 72-hour refund policy. This was slightly alarming, but I figured I could wait it out.Īfter three hours went by with the message being updated to "soon", I purchased a different server and submitted a refund request to Shockbyte. After making the purchase, I was greeted by a message which stated something along the lines of "We're currently experiencing high volumes and do not have enough server space" with an estimated wait time for my server around 30 minutes. I typically go with Apex, but I was low on money and I found the server hosting company Shockbyte.Īfter creating an account with them, I found a 50% off coupon and purchased one of their "Zeus" tier servers for around $15.
